Sustain™ FAQs
(Q) How many servings does SUSTAIN™ provide?
(A) Approximately 32 servings per tub.
(Q) How long will a tub last?
(A) Approximately 32 days if you use a serving a day, surprisingly! It totally depends on how frequently you use it.
(Q) How should I mix it?
(A) With water (4-8oz, with ice as an optional extra), or with milk if you need or want the calories (or just don’t care about the calories). In a shaker, with a whisk, in a blender, with a hand blender etc. Really, it is your call.
(Q) When shall I drink it?
(A) Anytime.
(Q) Before training?
(A) Sure.
(Q) After training?
(A) Yep. But we recommend Replenish™ for immediately after training. SUSTAIN™ can be used alone or as part of a whole-food meal about 60-90 minutes after your serving of Replenish™.
(Q) Before bed?
(A) Absolutely. The rate of digestion of SUSTAIN™ is slow and sustained because of the micellar casein content, which can ensure a constant trickle of amino acids into your bloodstream through the night as you sleep.
(Q) Why is ensuring amino acid in the bloodstream and consuming protein frequently so important?
(A) To ensure you keep muscle protein synthesis rates elevated and enough essential amino acids (EAA) to meet the demand while synthesis rates are up. In layman’s, we’re talking muscle growth.
(Q) So why SUSTAIN™? What separates it from plain whey protein powders?
(A) Whey protein is awesome and we won’t deny that. In fact, we have designed SUSTAIN™ to include whey fractions, however when used alone, whey is great for elevating protein synthesis, but poor for ensuring they remain elevated. Even worse, the rapid-acting whey does nothing to reduce protein breakdown. Casein does not elevate muscle protein synthesis rates to the heights that whey does, but it sure as hell keeps the rates elevated – for as long as eight hours! Not only this, but casein also exerts a marked effect on protein breakdown reduction. SUSTAIN™ combines both protein sources to provide both a rapid and sustained-release of amino acids into the bloodstream to take advantage of the effects of both.
Plus, it tastes sublime!
(Q) So will the casein not slow the digestion of the whey?
(A) Yes, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. While whey elevates protein synthesis higher than casein does (but not for as long and without the impact on reducing protein breakdown), you need to remember that the only time the stomach of a bodybuilder (or those following multi-meal day schedules) is even remotely close to fully empty is upon waking. This was the environmental condition (the fasted-state) used in the studies showing whey’s and casein’s effects on protein synthesis. Therefore whey’s digestion will almost always be impacted anyway, even if taken alone – which it rarely ever is as bodybuilders combine it with carbs and fat also to form a “meal replacement”. The ideal way to exploit whey to full capacity is to consume whey on an empty stomach upon waking and about an hour later consuming casein and carbohydrate (and fat). Not only is this not as cost-effective since you have to purchase two separate products, it is also not convenient for many who need to consume breakfast and then go train or get to work on time. SUSTAIN™ combines the two, making a much more cost-effective alternative and certainly a much more convenience choice.
(Q) So should I get all my daily protein from SUSTAIN™?
(A) Theoretically you could, but that is simply not economical for most people, nor do we recommend it for anyone. In certain times of stress or general “busyness”, when protein powders are all that is convenient then that is fine, but we recommend the majority of your protein intake comes in the form of real food, such as meats, fish, poultry etc. Use SUSTAIN™ to supplement this dietary foundation to add extra protein to your daily intake, or use 60-90 minutes after Replenish to keep muscle protein synthesis rates elevated.
(Q) Can I take it anyway other than as a shake?
(A) Of course. We have a section of our website that explains many different recipes that can be made using SUSTAIN™, including ice pops, pudding, protein bars, and a terrific weight gainer recipe!
You could also mix it into your oatmeal to give it a delightful peanutty-butty-fudgey flavor!
(Q) What is inulin and why is it good?
(A) It is a soluble fiber that your body cannot digest. It absorbs water and swells in your stomach, slowing digestion of other nutrients in the stomach and delaying their absorption through the intestines. This helps you stay satiated and assists in the sustained-release effect of the micellar casein. Also, it significantly improves the usual “chalky” texture and taste of casein.
(Q) How did you manage to get it to taste so good?
(A) Tail of rat and leg of newt, hair of dog and an old black boot.
(Q) Hmmmm…
(A) Yeah ok, be like that. Just be ready for some pretty spectacular, original and quite innovative flavoring systems to be unleashed via this product.
(Q) I have a medical condition. Is it ok that I use SUSTAIN™?
(A) Always consult your GP before using a dietary supplement.
